I give you one of the greatest developments ever.

One of my favorite videos about branding is this one. This video, from Potential Church in Florida shows how designers and Art Directors feel when the work they have put so much time and emotion in is changed by people who honestly lack not only the idea of branding, but of branding conformity.

Last night, we had one of those weird situations happen in Louisville that I can never remember happening before.

The weather was nice, sunny and there wasn’t really a rain cloud in the sky. That was until about 7:00pm when the tornado sirens started blowing. A stray storm coming through the area was dropping tornadoes and unfortunately, it was within minutes of my house.

Being the person I am, I walked outside to see the storm develop. I got to see the tornado that hit the Churchill Downs barns and Papa John’s Cardinal Stadium develop over the tree lines before losing it as it moved on. But one person, staying at a local hotel, got some great video of the small tornado.

Here is that video:

Over the past few years, I have been working as a graphic designer with local and even internationally known companies.

One of my favorite things though is freelancing. In that moment, I get to step away from the box that is ‘business’ and take my creativity to the next level. I have been fortunate enough to work with people that allow me to think outside of the box and do things they probably would not normally do.

About a year ago, I started thinking about taking this freelance thing to the next level and making it a ‘job’ of sorts, hoping one day that it may lead to a fully sustainable business.

I had been thinking of names and logos but could never come up with that one name that stuck.

As a fan of extreme sports and mixed martial arts (MMA), I became more enamored with the styles and creativity of the companies branding those sports. I can remember coming up with the name ‘Nuckle’ one night, spelled differently than the part of your body and a name that steps away from the traditional design description.

So in that moment, I knew I had a name, but I needed a logo.

I started sketching, throwing away, sketching, passing around and then sketching some more.

But as a lot of designer’s will attest to, sometimes inspiration hits you when you least expect it.

Walking into my boss’ office one day, I noticed a coffee cup stain on his desk. I remember thinking how cool the design was and how that may make a nice logo for something.

Here’s what I saw;

I took a picture, went back to my office and started thinking. Maybe this was it.

Later that night, I started drawing and doing some mock-ups. The early design ideas looked like this:

I just couldn’t get it down right, down to that design I liked and the design I thought ‘branded’ the company.

After days and days of working through this, I finally settled on something I liked.

So, from a desktop to the world wide web, that was the development of the Nuckle Creative logo.
